Collection: Traditional Saunas UK
Finnish, Wood-Burning & Electric Sauna Cabins
A traditional sauna is the original Nordic format — high heat (70–100°C), low humidity, and the option to throw water on hot stones to produce steam known as löyly. It's the design used in Finnish saunas for over two thousand years, and remains the gold standard for cardiovascular recovery, muscle relief, and the deepest relaxation. At Nuovo Luxury we stock the UK's widest range of traditional sauna cabins — Finnish, wood-burning, and electric — for both garden and indoor installation. Prices start from £5,112.
What Makes a Sauna "Traditional"?
A traditional sauna heats air rather than your body directly (the way infrared saunas do). Heat is generated by a kiuas — a sauna stove topped with stones (typically olivine diabase or peridotite) that radiate intense, dry heat. Pouring water on the stones produces löyly, a burst of steam that raises perceived humidity and intensifies the bathing experience. Traditional sessions are short (10–20 minutes), hot, and followed by a cool-down — the contrast is what delivers the physiological benefit.
Choose Your Heat Source: Wood-Burning or Electric
Wood-burning sauna heaters (Harvia M3 and similar) deliver the most authentic Finnish experience — the crackle of burning logs, the aroma of birch or alder, and full off-grid capability. Warm-up takes 30–45 minutes and you'll need a flue/chimney installation plus log storage. Wood-fired saunas suit rural sites, off-grid locations, and traditionalists.
Electric sauna heaters (Harvia Cilindro PC90 9kW is our most-fitted unit) are simpler — plug in, set the temperature, and the cabin is ready in 20–30 minutes. Most include Wi-Fi or app control for remote pre-heating. They suit suburban gardens, indoor installations, and daily-use owners who want convenience.
Indoor or Outdoor Traditional Saunas
Our traditional sauna range covers both placements. Indoor traditional saunas (Finnish-style cabins sized for utility rooms, basements, and home gyms) work especially well with electric heaters. For garden installations, browse our dedicated Outdoor Saunas UK range — every model in that range is engineered for the British climate with insulated walls, double-glazed safety glass, and weather-resistant timber.
Construction & Materials
Every traditional sauna we stock uses premium softwood that combines insulation, weather resistance, and low resin content (resin can drip when heated). Our standard materials are Nordic spruce (the classic choice — light, fragrant, and stable), Canadian hemlock (knot-free, smooth finish), and thermally treated thermowood (heat-modified for superior durability outdoors). Benches are always knot-free softwood — cooler to the touch at high temperatures.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a traditional sauna?
A traditional sauna heats the cabin air to 70–100°C using a stove (kiuas) topped with stones. Pouring water on the stones produces steam (löyly) that intensifies the heat. This is the original Finnish format and the design used for genuine Nordic-style bathing — distinct from infrared saunas, which heat your body directly at much lower air temperatures.
What's the difference between a traditional sauna and an infrared sauna?
A traditional sauna heats the air to 70–100°C using electric or wood-burning stoves; an infrared sauna heats your body directly at 45–65°C using infrared panels. Traditional saunas deliver intense, authentic Nordic heat and the option for steam (löyly); infrared saunas are gentler, faster to heat, and use less energy. Both have health benefits — the choice depends on the experience you want.
Wood-burning or electric — which is the more authentic traditional sauna?
Wood-burning is closer to the original Finnish tradition (the original kiuas was always wood-fired), but modern electric heaters from manufacturers like Harvia and Helo replicate the heat profile and löyly experience faithfully. Most UK buyers choose electric for daily convenience; wood-burning is the choice for off-grid installations, rural homes, or owners who specifically want the ritual of building the fire.
Can I install a traditional sauna indoors?
Yes — many of our traditional sauna cabins are designed for indoor installation in utility rooms, basements, home gyms, or wellness rooms. Indoor traditional saunas always use electric heaters (wood-burning requires a flue) and need adequate ventilation. The room must support the 32-amp electrical supply most full-size traditional heaters require.
How hot does a traditional sauna get?
Traditional sauna temperatures sit between 70°C and 100°C — typically around 80–90°C for a balanced session. Humidity stays low (below 20%) until you pour water on the stones, when the brief löyly burst spikes perceived temperature dramatically. Sessions are usually 10–20 minutes, with a cool-down break between rounds.
Are Harvia heaters good?
Harvia is Finland's largest sauna heater manufacturer and the brand we fit most often. The Harvia Cilindro PC90 9kW is our standard electric heater — reliable, app-controllable, and rated for cabins up to about 14m³. For wood-burning, the Harvia M3 is the workhorse. Both come with full manufacturer warranties.
How much does a traditional sauna cost in the UK?
Traditional saunas at Nuovo Luxury start from £5,112 for the Atlas 2m Barrel Sauna with a wood-burning heater, through to £19,995 for the 6-person Hideout cabin with premium electric heating and full thermowood construction. Most popular 4-person traditional saunas sit in the £8,500–£14,500 range.
