What Size Sauna Do I Need? A Capacity Guide by Use Case
Share
Getting the size right is the difference between a sauna you use three times a week and one that gathers cobwebs. Too small feels claustrophobic with friends. Too big takes forever to heat and wastes energy. Here's how to choose.
Sauna Capacity Guide
| Capacity | Best For | Typical Footprint | Heater Size | Our Models | From Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 person | Couples, solo use, small gardens | 1.2m × 1.2m | 3–6kW | Infrared saunas | £2,395 |
| 4 person | Families, regular entertaining | 2m × 2m | 6–9kW | M-Sanctuary | £11,499 |
| 5 person | Most popular — families + a guest | 2.2m × 2.2m | 9kW | Heat Quad, Sanctuary, Fort Soleil | £9,990 |
| 6 person | Social saunas, wellness businesses | 2.4m × 3m+ | 9kW+ | The Hideout | £19,995 |
| 8+ person | Commercial, mobile sauna businesses | 3m+ × 4m+ | 12kW+ | Bespoke builds | Quote |
How to Decide: Key Questions
1. How many people will actually use it at once?
Not how many people could use it — how many will, on a typical weekday evening? Most customers tell us they use their sauna as a couple 80% of the time, with friends joining once or twice a month. If that's you, a 4–5 person sauna is the sweet spot: comfortable for two, big enough for occasional groups.
2. Where is it going?
Measure your intended spot. Allow for: the sauna footprint + 50cm clearance on all sides for ventilation and maintenance + the door swing. Our M-Sanctuary at roughly 2.2m × 2.2m fits on a standard patio. The Hideout at 5m length needs a dedicated area.
3. Do you want a changing room?
A vestibule or changing area adds 1–1.5m to the total length. It's worth the extra space if you sauna regularly — somewhere to leave clothes, towels, and a drink without getting them damp. Both our Hideout and bespoke builds include changing room options.
4. Bench layout matters as much as square footage
A well-designed bench layout can make a 4-person sauna feel spacious while a poorly designed 6-person sauna feels cramped. L-shaped or U-shaped benches are the most space-efficient. Two-tier benches give you temperature zones — hotter at the top, milder below.
The Most Common Mistake
Buying too small. We hear it regularly: "I wish we'd gone one size up." A sauna that fits 4 people comfortably will feel tight with 4 people plus towels, buckets, and the inevitable friend who wants to try it. If you're between sizes, go up.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size sauna do I need for 2 people?
A 2-person sauna typically measures around 1.2m × 1.2m. However, many couples prefer a 4-person model for the extra comfort and space. Our infrared models start from £2,395 for a compact unit.
What size sauna do I need for a family?
A 4–5 person sauna is ideal for most families. The Heat Quad (from £9,990) and Sanctuary (from £14,995) comfortably seat a family of four with room for guests.
How much space do I need in my garden for a sauna?
The sauna footprint plus 50cm clearance on all sides. A 5-person sauna like the Heat Quad needs approximately 3m × 3m of garden space including clearances. You'll also need a level, load-bearing base (concrete slab or paving).
