What Is Alabaster? The Stone Behind the Softest Light in the Room

If you have ever walked into a room lit by alabaster, you will have noticed something before you noticed the fitting itself. The light has no edge to it. There is no bright point to look away from, no hard shadow on the wall behind. The stone is doing something a fabric shade or a frosted bulb cannot quite manage.

Here is what alabaster actually is, and why it behaves that way.

The short answer

Alabaster is a fine-grained, translucent form of gypsum, a soft mineral made of calcium sulphate. It is soft enough to scratch with a fingernail, which is exactly why people have been carving it since antiquity, and light enough in structure that light passes straight through a thin section of it.

Confusingly, the word has been used for two different stones. The alabaster of ancient Egypt, the material of canopic jars and lamps, was usually calcite, a harder stone properly called calcite alabaster or onyx-marble. When a lighting company today says alabaster, it means gypsum alabaster. That is the softer, whiter, more translucent of the two, and the one worth putting a bulb behind.

How it forms

Alabaster is sedimentary. It forms where a body of saline water evaporates and leaves its dissolved minerals behind, layer on layer, over a very long time. Ancient seas and salt lakes dried out, gypsum settled in beds, and the weight of everything above compressed those beds into stone.

The veining is a record of that process. The cloudy greys, the honey and amber threads, the occasional rust-coloured drift through a pale block: those are mineral impurities that happened to be in the water at a particular moment. They are the reason no two alabaster shades are identical, and the reason you should never expect the piece you receive to match a photograph exactly.

Where it comes from

Spain is the dominant source of lighting-grade alabaster, and has been for a long time. The deposits of the Ebro valley in Aragon produce large, clean blocks with the even translucency that lighting needs. You will see Spanish alabaster named specifically on better fittings, and that is a genuine quality signal rather than marketing.

Italy has its own tradition, centred on Volterra in Tuscany, where alabaster carving has been a local craft for centuries. Volterra tends towards sculpture and decorative objects more than lighting.

Why it glows instead of shining

This is the part that matters.

A conventional light fitting has a source and a shade. The bulb makes the light, the shade blocks or bounces some of it, and what reaches your eye is either the bulb itself or a reflection. Glare is what happens when too much of the source reaches you directly.

Alabaster does not block light. It transmits it. Light enters the surface of the stone, scatters off millions of tiny crystal boundaries inside, bounces around, and leaves the far side in every direction at once. The stone stops being a shade and becomes the light source. The whole face of it is lit, evenly, at a fraction of the intensity of the bulb inside.

That scattering also warms the colour. Alabaster absorbs slightly more blue than red, so the light that comes out is a little warmer than the light that went in. It is why alabaster looks good with warm white lamps and slightly odd with cool ones.

Alabaster and marble are not the same thing

They get used interchangeably and they should not be.

Marble is metamorphic. It started as limestone, then heat and pressure recrystallised it. It is calcite, roughly 3 on the Mohs hardness scale, hard enough for floors and worktops, and with a few thin exceptions it is essentially opaque. Light bounces off marble. It does not pass through.

Alabaster is sedimentary, gypsum, around 2 on the same scale, and translucent. You can hold a slice of it up to a window and see the shape of the window through it. That single property is the whole reason it is used for lighting.

Is alabaster expensive?

As a raw material, no. Gypsum is common and Spanish quarries produce it at scale. What you pay for in a finished light is everything that happens after the block leaves the quarry.

Alabaster is carved, not moulded. It is soft, which makes it workable, but soft also means it chips, cracks along unseen veins, and ruins itself late in the process after hours of work have already gone in. Waste rates are high. A shade has to be cut thin enough to transmit light and thick enough not to break, and finding that line by hand on a natural material with inconsistent internal structure is skilled work.

So the price of an alabaster light tracks the carving more than the stone. A small wall light starts around £169.00 including VAT. A large tiered chandelier, which needs many matched pieces from stone of consistent colour, runs to several thousand.

What it is like to live with

Alabaster is an indoor stone. Gypsum is slightly soluble in water, so damp is its enemy: bathrooms with real steam, exterior walls, anywhere it will be rained on. Kept dry it is stable for generations, and plenty of Victorian alabaster is still in perfectly good condition.

It dusts with a dry cloth and nothing else. Do not reach for a spray cleaner, and above all do not use vinegar, which is acidic and will etch the surface. We have written the full method in how to clean alabaster lamps and light fittings.

Older alabaster sometimes yellows. That is usually decades of dust, oils from handling and heat from old incandescent bulbs rather than anything wrong with the stone. Modern LED and low-wattage lamps run far cooler and the problem largely goes away.

Seeing it in person

Photographs are poor at alabaster, because a camera cannot show you the depth of a translucent material. The veining reads as flat pattern on a screen and as something with thickness and distance in the room.
